Snarling, with it's head lowered, this bear sculpture doesn't look real happy!

Ironwood is a type of wood (like walnut or mahagony) that is used to carve this bear. The back portion of the ironwood bear sculpure is very smooth and glossy. The front part of the bear has "hair". It has been finely carved. It is more difficult to carve the hair - but the smoothness shows the beauty of the wood. Therefore, this combination shown in this photo of an ironwood bear is the most popular style. No two bears are exactly the same since each is individually carved by hand.
