- The dime is the smallest diameter and thickness of any U.S. coin. It was authorized in 1792. The first dime featured a feminine head representing Liberty and there was an eagle on the back. In 1837 the dime changed and Liberty was seated. In 1892 a feminine head of Liberty returned. In 1916 the dime commonly known as the Mercury dime was minted. This dime shows the head of a winged-capped Liberty. It was in use until 1946 when the Franklin D. Roosevelt dime was adopted. The term "dime" comes from the French word "disme" meaning "tenth part." If you enjoy history, these cuff links are part of history. They use the Mercury dime minted for 40 years between 1916 and 1946. These mercury dime cuff links are cicular in shape.
