The dime is the smallest diameter and thickness of any U.S. coin. It was authorized in 1792. The first dime featured a feminine head representing Liberty and there was an eagle on the back. In 1837 the dime changed and Liberty was seated. In 1892 a feminine head of Liberty returned. In 1916 the dime commonly known as the Mercury dime was minted. This dime shows the head of a winged-capped Liberty. It was in use until 1946 when the Franklin D. Roosevelt dime was adopted. The term "dime" comes from the French word "disme" meaning "tenth part."
